Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Salih Hakkı Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Grevena (Grebene) in 1878/79, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Salih Hakkı in Korçë (Görice) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Salih Hakkı to Neapoli (Nasliç), Grevena and Ajloun (Aclun) from 1884 to 1891, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur) in 1890/91, then back to Grevena from 1891 to 1895, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1890. The last posts were in Filiates in 1895/96 and Grevena again from 1896 to 1898.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 600 in 1891/92, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Grevena, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
