Life#
Born in Beyşehir in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Said Hulusi Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Said Hulusi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Said Hulusi in Karditsa (Kardiçe) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Volos (Golos) and Sinop from 1878 to 1884, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1881/82. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1881. The last posts were in Beyşehir, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1891.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1881/82, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Sinop, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 13 years the salary stood below the first, 475 kuruş against 500. The final annual entry is for 1890/91.
