Life

Mehmet Ali Efendi was born in Cerkezistan in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Mehmet Ali began work in Eregli in 1903/04, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Mehmet Ali in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Doğubayazıt, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
