Life#
Haydar Efendi was born in Van in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1886/87, Haydar began work, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Haydar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Hadımköy. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) and As-Suwayda (Süveyda) from 1903 to 1906 and Aydın in 1906/07.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 500 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in As-Suwayda, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
