Life#
Mustafa Hayri Efendi was born in Ivezic in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Hayri also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
Work began in Ivezic in 1871/72, at about 15, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Mustafa Hayri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Botevgrad (Orhaniye). For 1878 to 1883 the lists have no entry. Mustafa Hayri then moved to Milas from 1883 to 1886, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1886 to 1896. The lists have no entry for 1887 to 1895. The last post was in Karacasu in 1896/97. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Milas, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
