Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a colonel (miralay). The official had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erciş, where the entries run to 1870/71. The official then moved to Bitlis, Hınıs, Erzurum and Shumen (Şumnu), four places in eight years. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1878/79.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 600 in 1878, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Shumen, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 11 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1878/79.
