Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Mustafa Asım Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mustafa Asım had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1891/92, Mustafa Asım began work in Baghdad (Bağdat), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mustafa Asım in Erzurum in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti), where the entries run to 1896/97, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1895/96. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Asım to Başkale in 1897/98, then Van from 1898 to 1904. The last posts were in Baghdad from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Baghdad, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
