Life#
Mehmet Şefik Efendi was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Şefik also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Şefik began work in Kirkuk in 1902/03, at about 20, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Mehmet Şefik in Kirkuk, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Kirkuk, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
