Life#
Mehmet İzzet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet İzzet also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1900/01, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1909/10 places Mehmet İzzet in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the register office (Sicil Kalemi), from 1907/08 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 400 in 1908/09, the peak, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 20,880 kuruş, 38 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
