Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Hüseyin Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Ziya also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
At about 17, in 1899/1900, Hüseyin Ziya began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Hüseyin Ziya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in Beirut in 1904/05 and Yozgat in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 400 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Yozgat, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less.
