Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Büyükdere in 1895/96, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1903/04. From 1904 to 1906 the annual entries place Hüseyin Hüsnü in Suakin (Sevakin), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The farthest post, Suakin, lay about 2,550 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 900 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Suakin, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
