Life#
Mustafa Mehdi Efendi was born in Sivas in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Trabzon in 1868/69, at about 20, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Mustafa Mehdi in the goods and stores office (Eşya Kalemi) in Thessaloniki (Selanik). Next came six places in 12 years, then Gürün from 1883 to 1888. Mustafa Mehdi then moved to five places in 16 years, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1894/95. The last post was in Fizan in 1904/05, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). In all, 15 places on three continents, a number reached by only 17 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. The farthest post, Fizan, lay about 3,000 km from Sivas, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 1,200 in 1904/05, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Fizan, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
