Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mustafa Zİya Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Mustafa Zİya had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Malkara in 1891/92, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1895/96 places Mustafa Zİya in Sultanyeri, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1895/96 as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Sultanyeri, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
