Life

Born in Sivas in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Yusuf Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Pasinler (Hasankale) in 1899/1900, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places Yusuf Ziya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Şebinkarahisar, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,000 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
