Life#
Born in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Mehmet Neşet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Neşet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Work began in Chania (Hanya) in 1894/95, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Neşet as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Chania. Next came Crete (Girit), Skopje (Üsküp) and Bijelo Polje (Akova) from 1896 to 1900. The last post was in Ivaylovgrad (Ortaköy) in 1900/01.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Chania, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Samsunlu devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by MERVE ÖZİNAN (2026) probably refers to Mehmet Neşet, since the name and the birth year agree.
