Life#
Mehmet Vehbi Efendi was born in Edirne in 1888/89 (AH 1306) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Vehbi began work in Nazımiye (Kızılkilise) in 1904/05, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Mehmet Vehbi in Elazığ as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Elazığ, when one in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
