Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Ibrahim Derviş Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1896/97, Ibrahim Derviş began work in Kırşehir, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Ibrahim Derviş in Kırşehir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Yozgat from 1904 to 1906 and Kayseri in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Kayseri, when one in four paid officials earned less.
