Life

This official was born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Topcu". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 18, in 1904/05, the official began work in Edirne, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places the official in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Soufli (Sofulu) from 1906 to 1908.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Alexandroupoli, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 12,000 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
