Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Lütfi Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Ömer Lütfi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 10, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Only 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 10 or younger. Every annual entry from 1873/74 to 1887/88 places Ömer Lütfi in the same office, dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 300 in 1876/77, the peak, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less. In all, 16 years of salary come to 52,260 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1887/88; the list of 1888/89 (AH 1306) gives the status word Vefat (death).
