Life

Born in Istanbul in 1886/87 (AH 1304), Mehmet Emin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Baskomiser". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Emin also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1903/04, Mehmet Emin began work in Mecca (Mekke), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Mehmet Emin in Mecca as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mecca, about 2,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Mecca, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
