Life

Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Nuri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Osman Nuri began work in Kemaliye in 1902/03, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Osman Nuri in Sivas as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Divriği from 1905 to 1908.

The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 300 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Divriği, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 13,200 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
