Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmet Sadri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From 1889/90 to 1893/94 every annual entry places Mehmet Sadri in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1891/92 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 30 kuruş a month in 1889/90, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 1,800 kuruş, 6 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
