Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mustafa Nazmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Nazmi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mustafa Nazmi in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 270 in 1904/05, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less.
