Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Mostar in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Osman Nuri began work in Banja Luka (Banaluka) in 1876/77, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mostar, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1878/79. Next came Feres in 1880/81 and Damascus in 1881/82, then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1882 to 1889. The last posts were in Homs (Humus) from 1889 to 1897, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1894/95 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1878/79, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mostar, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
