Life#
Born in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Behic Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Behic also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Svilengrad in 1892/93, at about 19, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1899/1900, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Ahmet Behic in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Svilengrad, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 400 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Svilengrad, when one in three paid officials earned less.
