Life

Lütfi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 26, in 1898/99, Lütfi began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1900/01 and 1901/02, place Lütfi in Şanlıurfa (Urfa) as a postal official (Posta Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Posta Memuru in Şanlıurfa, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
