Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), İbrahim Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a deputy judge (naib). İbrahim Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Sehremaneti in 1891/92, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 70 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places İbrahim Hakkı in Sehremaneti in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1906 to 1908, with a rise to Senet Memuru.
The salary went from 70 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 300 in 1906/07, the peak, as Senet Memuru in Istanbul, when one in four paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 34,680 kuruş, 43 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
