Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1896/97, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Ali Rıza in Skopje as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Radoviste from 1904 to 1906 and Skopje again in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 600 in 1904/05, as 3. Müdür in Radoviste, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
