Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Mustafa Şahin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mustafa Şahin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1881/82, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 140 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Mustafa Şahin in Mudanya as a central office official (Merkez Memuru). Mustafa Şahin then moved to İnegöl from 1884 to 1888, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş) in 1884/85, then Bursa from 1888 to 1893, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1890/91. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Şahin to Balıkesir, Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti), Sancaktepe and Çengelköy, four places in eight years. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1907.
The salary went from 140 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 124,440 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
