Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Naci Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Naci had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mehmet Naci in Izmir (İzmir) as a postal official (Posta Memuru). In 1894/95 the lists place Mehmet Naci in Mytilene (Midilli).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 350 in 1894/95, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Mytilene, when one in four paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 11,400 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1894/95, the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
