Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Şevket Efendi was the child of a colonel (miralay). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Şevket also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 17, in 1896/97, Hüseyin Şevket began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Hüseyin Şevket as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Babi seraskeri. Next came Istanbul, Yeniköy and Edirne from 1900 to 1903, then a return to Istanbul from 1903 to 1905. The last post was in Andırın in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as 3. Müdür in Andırın, when half the paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 22,680 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
