Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Mehmet Hayrettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Mehmet Hayrettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 13, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Mehmet Hayrettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kütahya. Next came Isparta and Zabid (Zebid) from 1871 to 1875, then Erzurum from 1876 to 1880. The last posts were in Bajil in 1880/81, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) and Yemen in 1882/83. The farthest post, Zabid, lay about 3,300 km from Istanbul, and 42 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 1,000 in 1873/74, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Zabid, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1882/83. Mehmet Hayrettin received a rank (rütbe).
