Life#
Yusuf Kenan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an examining clerk (mümeyyiz). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1891/92, Yusuf Kenan began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Yusuf Kenan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1896/97. Yusuf Kenan then moved to Heybeliada in 1897/98. The last posts were in Mahmutpasa tabyasi from 1898 to 1903.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 500 in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Mahmutpasa tabyasi, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 43,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
