Life#
Born in Targovishte (Eski Cuma) in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1874/75, Mehmet Nuri began work in Razgrad (Hezargrad), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Mehmet Nuri as an official (Memur) in Razgrad. Mehmet Nuri then moved to Kurukavak in 1878/79, then Kastamonu from 1881 to 1886. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1881. Next came İskilip from 1886 to 1892. For 1892 to 1894 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Mecdel from 1894 to 1902, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1878/79, the peak, as Memur in Kurukavak, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 111,360 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
