Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Hopa in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Nuri began work in Bilecik in 1897/98, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mehmet Nuri in Bilecik as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1902 to 1904.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 400 in 1902/03, as Nakliye Memuru in Afyonkarahisar, when one in three paid officials earned less.
