Life#
Mehmet Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Ziya began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Ziya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 555 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when two in three paid officials earned less.
