Life#
Mehmet Salim Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Salim also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Salim began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1899/1900 places Mehmet Salim in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
