Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Kadri Efendi was the child of a sheikh (şeyh). Mehmet Kadri had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 19, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1894/95 and 1895/96, place Mehmet Kadri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Memur in Istanbul, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
