Life#
Mustafa Halit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Maliye Nezarteti Mumeyyiz". Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani).
At about 19, in 1899/1900, Mustafa Halit began work in Baghdad (Bağdat), paid from the start, on 215 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Mustafa Halit in Baghdad in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), where the entries run to 1902/03. The last post was in Istanbul, the birthplace, in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 215 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 300 in 1901/02, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Baghdad, when one in five paid officials earned less.
