Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Nuri had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 52, paid from the start, on 450 kuruş a month. Only 4 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 52 or older. Every annual entry from 1893/94 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Nuri in the same post, factory official (Fabrika Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
