Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Mehmet Selahattin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1895/96, Mehmet Selahattin began work in the Gumruk Kalemi in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 25 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Selahattin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), from 1903/04 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
The salary went from 25 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 200 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Havalename Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less.
