Life#
Mehmet Sait Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1897/98, Mehmet Sait began work in Uşak, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Mehmet Sait in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Anadolukavağı in 1905/06.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 400 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Anadolukavağı, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 14,400 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
