Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), this official came from the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). The official had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Basra in 1895/96, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with the official as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Isara, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Baghdad in 1903/04 and Beyoğlu in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1897/98, as Posta Memuru in Isara, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 34,800 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
