Life#
Mehmet Rahmi Efendi was born in Svishtov (Ziştovi) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Rahmi also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Mehmet Rahmi in Geyve as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Istanbul from 1896 to 1898 and Sinanpaşa (Sincanlı) from 1898 to 1900.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 500 in 1898/99, as 3. Müdür in Sinanpaşa, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 20,472 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
