Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Salih Nazmi Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Salih Nazmi had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1900/01, Salih Nazmi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Salih Nazmi in the same post, official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), in Galata.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 420 in 1904/05, as Mevrude Memuru in Galata, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
