Life#
İspiraki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). İspiraki knew four languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Istanbul in 1900/01, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1905/06, every annual entry places İspiraki in the same post, official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), in Galata.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 230 in 1905/06, as Mevrude Memuru in Galata, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 10,080 kuruş, 28 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
