Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mehmet Remzi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Remzi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1899/1900, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Mehmet Remzi in Galata as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Remzi back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1905, with a rise to a post in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası). The last post was in Imdadiye in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Imdadiye, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
