Life#
Born in Edirne in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Pol Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Pol had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Pol knew four languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Pol began work in Edirne in 1891/92, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Pol as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa). Next came Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç), Crete (Girit), Trabzon and Svilengrad, four places in nine years. For 1896 to 1901 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Karaağaç from 1903 to 1905.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Svilengrad, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
