Life#
Mustafa İhsan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "idarei Mahsusa Kaptani". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa İhsan also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mustafa İhsan began work in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1896/97 places Mustafa İhsan in Galata, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1895/96 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru).
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 140 in 1896/97, as Mersule Memuru in Galata, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less.
