Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), İsmail Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1889/90, İsmail Hakkı began work in Galata, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1894/95 to 1899/1900 every annual entry places İsmail Hakkı in Galata, first as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), from 1896/97 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 240 in 1899/1900, the peak, in the Sevk Kalemi in Galata, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 11,160 kuruş, 31 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
